Da Vinci Code
The Da Vinci Code is one of the best-known treasure movies in the world, and its 149-minute runtime makes it a popular option for home video. Sadly, this film is not without its faults, however, and should be avoided at all costs. Despite its grandiose claims, The Da Vinci Code is a dull movie that lacks fun and intrigue. For all its great actors, the movie suffers from the sin of over-explanation.
In the first movie, the bad guys kill a Catholic Cardinal, and the heroes sneak off with the Templar's shroud, tucking it away in a laundry bag. However, the bad guys eventually catch them and let them go, leading them to Afghanistan. The Templars eventually formed the Freemasons and shipped the treasure to America. In both movies, the heroes must chase the villains, and the plot arc is pretty predictable.
Angels and Demons
If you've watched The Da Vinci Code, then you probably already know that the second part of the movie, "Angels and Demons," is even better. This sequel stars Dan Brown's Robert Langdon, the same guy who almost brought down the Catholic Church in the first part. This time around, Langdon is in Rome with Italian scientist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), who's been kidnapped by a group claiming to be Illuminati, an ancient secret society with a nefarious past. The kidnappers threaten to publicly kill the cardinals and blow up the Vatican, so Langdon is determined to find them and stop them.
If you're looking for a more serious treasure-hunting adventure, you can't go wrong with Angels & Demons. While National Treasure is a fantastic adventure, it's a little far-fetched. In Angels & Demons, a psychotic member of the "Illuminati" begins killing cardinals. In Angels & Demons, there's a psychotic "Illuminati" member who kills cardinals. But that's just the movie's gimmick.
Treasure Island
The classic novel Treasure Island is now the basis for the most popular movie about a lost pirate. Set on the mysterious island, Jim Hawkins races to save his girlfriend from Long John Silver and find the lost treasure. In this classic retelling, the characters are animated and take on animal characteristics. The story is as thrilling and exciting as the book, and the movie is a must-see for fans of classic literature. For those not familiar with the book, the first Treasure Island movie production starred Jackie Cooper and veteran actor Wallace Beery. Cooper and Beery co-starred in four movies together. Trying to emulate the style of Spielberg and recreate the movie's bigness has failed to live up to its original grandeur. Kumiko isn't the only one on the adventure. In addition to the adventure, the movie explores the fuzzy line between fact and fiction.
Despite its somewhat flawed plot, Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter functions well. Kikuchi's performance is impressive, and the long take between Kumiko and her mother is breathtakingly perfect. The screenplay closely mimics the Coen characters, situations, and flavors. Lastly, the cinematography is beautiful. Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter is a solid choice for a family-friendly holiday movie.
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life
In this video game, Lara Croft attempts to locate the box of Pandora, believed to hold all kinds of deadly organisms. She and her friend Terry go on a worldwide hunt to uncover the treasures inside the box. While in pursuit of her mission, Lara Croft decimates numerous male opponents. In the process, she also discovers the mystery behind the mysterious box.
At first, Lara and her friend Terry encounter the Shadow Guardians. These mystical creatures appear in patches of water on dead trees. Once Lara climbs onto the tree, she is drawn into the crystalline sphere. The crystalline structure houses a pool of highly corrosive black acid. The Cradle of Life is a dangerous place. It's not recommended to go near it alone.
